Hair & Makeup

Having a destination wedding should not be a complicated event.  If you have the right wedding planner it should actually go smooth sailing.  I try to make my couples feel relaxed and confident that what they envision for their wedding day is exactly what they are going to experience.  But just because your destination wedding is simple it does not mean it won't be beautiful, classy and chic.  And especially the bride,  she should look as FABULOUS as possible.  So my point is this yes, you are saving lots of money by eloping and not having that traditional 250 guests shabang but don't skimp on some important things.  For example, your look.  You want to look at your pictures and feel that you look modern, fresh and put together.  Spend the cash and have your hair and makeup done.  You not only will look beautiful but you certainly will feel it too.  It makes a difference when you have been pampered a bit.  It also makes a difference when you look in the mirror and see yourself in a different way, an updo, ringlets, loose curls with flowers in your hair.  Your makeup should be fresh and applied in a way that will stay on throughout the day so that when the ceremony is over and your heading to dinner you still look great.  It's the least you can do for yourselves brides!
Keep in mind brides it's your day... spend the money to look your best!  Believe me you won't regret it!

all that glitters is venice

When Rosie Parson, a UK based wedding photographer, sent me this portfolio from her recent collaboration in Venice, I had to pinch myself. Venice. Venice. Oh Venice. I know you well and love you more. A city like this is best enjoyed in silence, at night and under the influence of total captivation. Fall is wonderful. Winter may be even better. And that dress you've been saving for a special occasion, pack that and nothing else. For a behind the scenes look into Rosie's photo shoot and collaboration, check out her blog."This dramatic backdrop of glorious colours and glittering waterways was chosen by photographer Rosie Parsons to capture the incomparable romance of the new collection of wedding gowns by Venetian designer Anna Molin. Her incredible dresses feature clean, flowing lines and contemporary styling while retaining a traditional feel ? perfect for modern brides who want to put their own twist on the classic bridal look."
Available at L'Atelier Molin, the dresses were accessorised with jewellery and hair accessories by up-and-coming designer Hannah Salomon of Kutuu and vintage jewellery specialists Flo & Percy. Hannah's work can also be found in her Etsy shop. Hannah is a talented jeweller from North Wales uses silver to create personalised pins with monograms of the happy couple's initials that can be used in the hair, or even inserted into bouquets for an unusual personal touch. The collections were perfectly placed in two of Venice?s most luxurious hotels ? the Palazzo Stern and the Locanda Vivaldi. The Locanda Vivaldi is a boutique hotel only a short walk from St Mark?s Square, and features Murano glass chandeliers. The Palazzo Stern has only just reopened after a major refurbishment, and Rosie was the first photographer to be granted access to its prestigious interiors featuring Moorish design from its 15th century roots and filled with pieces of art collected by the owners, the Stern family. {Photo and copy credits: Rosie Parsons}

Style AND Comfort...

I used to make fun of my mom always gravitating to the same brands. One of them was Aerosoles. I thought they were always for nurses or grandmas. Why I lumped those two groups together I do not know. (Sorry Kim!) Anyhow, last winter I was shopping[...]

Gifts for the Wedding Party

Here is a novel idea for gifts for the little ones in your wedding party. For all the Cape Town brides there is a shop in Canal Walk called Build a Bear and that is exactly what it is. You choose your own accessories and clothing and you can then personalise your bear. How excited will your little ones be to get a gift like this. You can also make a sport themed bear for hubby with all the South African sport outfits available. The Build a Bear parties are said to be a whole lotta fun!

Real wedding inspiration: Sarah + Nick

Sarah from Truly Smitten emailed me these amazing photos from her recent wedding, and I had to get her to do a write-up of all the details.

Theme / Color / Decor: (Modern with Charm)My taste in design style has always been described as simple yet sophisticated, modern and charming by friends and family...so naturally, coming up with our wedding theme and decor was very easy. We wanted to go for something simple and elegant and incorporate nice contrasting hues of yellows, marigolds paired up with black. I also designed clustered pattern of ginkgo leafs on all my printed materials such as programs, invitations, signage, etc... it's a personal favorite tree of my dad's and I knew he would find this charming.
Ceremony & Reception: (Westin Hotel - Lakeside Pavillion Tent, Itasca IL)We got lucky and were able to snag our tent at the hotel to have our ceremony and reception in. We utilized the same room to do both and just flipped the room during our cocktail hour (which was in the lobby). Our florist lined the aisle with clusters of lemony yellow and white floral arrangements and tall stemmed votives on both sides. It was very important for me to have both my mom and dad give me away to my husband, so also decided to go with a extra wide aisle runner so that BOTH my parents were able to walk me down the aisle. We chose to go with gold chivari chairs and had my coordinators place programs on each seat and also I designed these "Bride" side and "Groom" side signages to be tied to the very last row of both sides of the aisle so that the guests would know which side to sit at. It was very efficient method and there was no need for ushers either. We had our string quartet play Handel "Water Suites" for the bridal party procession and I picked Vivaldi's "Winter Largo" for my walk down the aisle. The cocktail hour was when we incorporated both our Thailand and Korean heritage by having thai appetizers and me changing into my traditional korean dress. The highlight of the night was our photobooth! We had a photobooth station with a technician and I also had a photobook/message table set up where guests could paste their photo and leave a message in this book. (www.partyphotobooths.com)
Floral Design: (Grace Ha-Kim from www.vale-of-enna.com) I have a friend who's a fantastic floral designer. Grace, Vale of Enna. We worked together to come up with low and lush centerpieces for the ceremony and reception. I told her that I wanted a "spring garden" look to our wedding and she chose lush, wide blooms in hues of yellows and whites and lined each vase with sliced lemons. Our tent ended up smelling so lemony! Grace also used tall dogwood branches and tulips for our ceremony altar piece arrangements and place card table. My bouquet consisted of beautiful creamy white ranunculus and rice flowers with black sash and my bridal party had this gorgeous eye popping green centered yellow-orange ranunculus.
Invitation & Printed Materials: (Myself, Truly Smitten - www.trulysmitten.com) I designed all the invitations and paper materials with the gingko leaf patterns. We have a ginkgo tree growing in my parent's back yard so I took a leaf and just digitally illustrated it and voila! I had a pattern for my letterpressed invitation, programs, signages, menus etc... Designing my invitations was my favorite part about this wedding =)
Photographer: (David Turner Photo - www.davidturnerphoto.com) We had a fantastic photographer and assistant that captured everything so well! I highly recommend him! They were truly a joy to work with.
Bridal Attire: My dress is actually a generic no-name brand. I had my aunt alter the design of it and I attached the black sash to it. To compliment my dress and sash, I wore a black satin d'orsay heels, a simple silk and feather vintage floral hair piece and a waist length veil. My bridesmaids dresses were from Vera Wang and I had all of them wear bright yellow flats during the reception and cocktail hour and wear their formal black heels for ceremony only. Groom and groomsmen wore classic black and white tux with black ties.
Weather:It was HORRID! Raining, storming AND snowing.

Can you build it

Um, well we're gonna try anyway. My MOH and I are nuts. There is just no denying that fact. For her wedding we decided to make all her mints using almond bark and adding food dye. Bad idea. Turns out that makes the melted almond bark turn all chunky so we[...]

A decadent row of round Australian chocolate diamonds (approx. 1.45 to 1.5mm=.2ct) are prong-set in a curved arch that extends over a round golden cultured freshwater pearl (approx. 9mm). The 14K bypass-style band is polished to a mirror-like shine.Cultured Freshwater Pearl and Chocolate Diamond 14K Ring Measures approx. 3/8"L x 9/16"W x 7/16"H with 1/16"W shank . from HSN

It's funny how until very recently, diamonds of considerably lower colors with brownish hues and yellowish overtones, were simply known as "low color diamonds".
Lower colored diamonds, are not as scarce or valuable as diamonds of icy white colors and therefore command less of a premium than the diamonds of higher (better) color grades.
Problem was, certain diamond mines tended to only produce diamonds of substantially lower colors. Well these are diamonds too and they needed to be sold..right? Well, of course!
Some brilliant marketing guru came up with an incredible idea; why not market these diamonds with finesse! Indeed, why not turn the very liability of the stone into something positive?
Thus, was born the marketing strategy known as "chocolate diamonds," "cognac diamonds," and/or "champagne diamonds".
