The Friday Five: 5 Things to Keep in Mind When
Booking a DJ

Booking a DJ for the first time can be a little overwhelming for a lot of brides, so I've put together the short list of tips to keep in mind:

1. How much experience do they have? It is important to ask how many weddings they have done and how often they do them. Also have them give you an example of their MC style and how they motivate guests to dance.

2. Meet with your DJ right before the wedding.  Go over the style of music you, your fiancé and wedding guests will enjoy with your DJ. This meeting should happen anywhere from a month to a few days before your wedding. You should also have a request list or "do not play" list. Any experienced DJ should walk you through the reception, help you with song selections, and put together a schedule for each important toast, dance, etc.

3. What does their set-up look like and what type of equipment do they use?  You want to ensure their equipment is in good condition and of good quality. They should also bring backup equipment in case something fails. The equipment should be as simple and clean as possible so as not to distract from the overall aesthetic of your wedding. Be sure to request they do not advertise during your event.  Often times these items inevitably find their way into your wedding pictures and video, and ruin what is an otherwise commercial-free event.

Cube DJ Set-Up

4. Have you played at our reception site before?  This is not a must, but a plus. Working with a DJ that has worked at the venue in the past allows them to envision where they will set up, and forsee any issues they've learned about from previous experiences there.

5. Are they insured?  This is something brides often overlook, but you should never hire a DJ without insurance. Often times a venue will require they have it so it's best to hire a DJ that has already taken the proper steps to become insured.

Winter Wedding Makeup

Here in Canada we celebrated Thanksgiving last weekend and although the calendar said October it certainly didn't feel like October outside! As I've mentioned before long weekends and weddings go hand in hand. Although I was super busy last weekend with wedding and brides, I did manage to find some time to spend with my family and eat way too much turkey, stuffing and apple pie. Yum! : ) This year our Thanksgiving weekend weather was more like a weekend in July!  It was a surprise to many of us but in particular my brides!

But the weather is changing quickly. This morning when I woke up I realized we can't hold Fall off any longer and although I love the Fall, I know winter is just around the corner now too. It's cool and rainy outside today here in Toronto - it's a perfect day to talk about winter wedding makeup!
In most parts of North America, there are just heaps of colours all around us in the spring and summer whereas in the winter months it tends to be a lot less colourful!  Don't get me wrong, there is nothing more beautiful than a cold sunny winter day when sunlight glistens on the snow and the snow almost sparkles in it's reflection. But for those winter days when the sun decides to stay behind the clouds and the snow gets dirty from all the cars on the road there is nothing I want to see more than a little colour!
Winter wedding makeup should be a time to use some colour - not in an "over the top" type of way but in a way that brings your skin to life! Winter 2012 makeup trends are all about colour which I couldn't be happier about. Almost anything goes - from a touch of colour on the eyelid to a bold wash of colour on the lip or cheek. This winter when you're considering your wedding makeup colour palette think about adding some colour to your natural bridal makeup look. Let's say your eyes are green, try adding a little bit of mauve to your eyelid or deepen your eyeliner to bring a more exotic look to yourself. Try not to shy away from colour on your lips either. I know most brides (including many of my brides) aren't comfortable wearing a bolder colour on their lips but consider mixing 2 or 3 colours together to get a unique lip shade all your own. Your lip colour doesn't have to be boring! Ask your makeup artist to create something for you that he/she hasn't given to anyone else before! Be unique. Be a little bold this winter and bring some colour to your wedding makeup!
See you all soon!www.vlmakeup.comvm@vickimillar.com416 953 5737

Real New York Indian Wedding Part 2 | Pooja +
Nils at the Plaza

Yesterday, we had the honor of sharing Pooja and Nils' festive and colorful sangeet party, the first part of their two day wedding celebration. It was a wonderful precursor to their absolutely stunning wedding day ceremony and reception at The Plaza, which is the focus of today's gorgeous post.

Venue & Event Director for Wedding - The Plaza with Emily Reifel
Wedding designer - David Tutera
Live music ceremony, cocktails & reception - The Michael Hart Band of Hank Lane Music
Light & Sound - Bentley Meeker
Photography - Roberto Falck Photography
Videography - Funico Studios
Wedding Cake - Sylvia Weinstock
Music & Dancers Baraat - DJ Magic Mike

Emily Reifel of CPS Events at The Plaza helped Pooja and Nils coordinate all the amazing details of their day-long celebration, including a new twist of a traditional baarat... According to Emily, "Normally this is done with a white horse, but their baarat was performed with the help of Indian drummers and dancers! We drew a lot of attention being that it was outside in front of The Plaza on the Grand Army Plaza!"
For the reception, David Tutera designed some absolutely breathtaking décor that included an MASSIVE floral elephant that was in the middle of the ballroom.
To learn more about this and other stunning Plaza weddings, be sure to subscribe to the Great Performances newsletter, where you will receive monthly updates on spectacular city affairs {sometimes even reported on by little old me}.

From the photographer, Roberto Falck Photography:
Pooja and Nils have impeccable taste, proven by their choice of David Tutera as their chosen designer and The Plaza as their wedding day venue. This cross cultural Indian and Norwegian extravaganza was a photographer's dream of lush and iconic details. Day one, at Pooja's parent's estate: a sea of bright colored saris and henna adorned palms. Day two, a rose embellished mandap under which the ceremony took place and a majestic topiary elephant at the helm of the reception. Pooja was breathtaking in her hand-stitched emerald, red and fuchsia lengha and Nils complemented in a navy tux.
As for the jewels...Pooja's polki diamond necklace was made in the royal Rajasthani style. And royal this wedding felt...Pooja and Nils shattered all previous notions of an elegant and festive affair and most importantly, they enjoyed every minute of it.
