Frigid Bride. Frigid Groom. Winter Wedding, I Presume!

icehotel.jpg We all know winter weddings can be as cozy and warm as a summer ceremony. But why not go all the way with your cold-weather wedding? Take it to the extreme with a destination wedding you and your wedding guests will talk about for years to come!

ICEHOTEL is located in Jukkasjarvi, 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle in Sweden. The temporary hotel is built entirely of ice obtained from the nearby Torne River. Each winter, the river is covered with a one-meter thick layer of crystal-clear ice from which the hotel is built. In the summer, the rooms, the suites, the ice bar, the reception area--everything--once again becomes part of the rushing rapids to the sea. Since the hotel is rebuilt once a year, the architecture is always strikingly different.

And here's the cool part (pun definitely intended!) They construct a beautiful chapel where couples are lined up to have a uniquely elegant wedding ceremony. Did I say cool? The average temperature inside ICEHOTEL is about 5 degrees Celsius. If the outdoor temperature falls below -30, then it may be 8 below 0, but no colder. SnowmanCandle.jpgBefore you freeze your fanny off just thinking about those temps, you'll be pleased to know that the restaurant, many of the suites, reception halls and the toilets are not made of ice, but are warm, cozy facilities. However, it would be a cop-out to spend three or four days there during your wedding and not sleep in an ice suite at least once or twice. Think about how much fun you'd have keeping each other warm!

The outstanding cuisine at the ICEHOTEL restaurant has been featured in Gourmet magazine , so you SnowflakeBottleTopper%20S2.jpgknow your wedding reception would be wonderfully catered. Imagine a spectacular, winter-white wedding gown with a floor-length cape. Snowflake Gel Candles.jpgAnd there are many winter wedding favors that feature snowflakes and ice-blue accents. You and your guests could enjoy skiing, ice skating, sleigh rides, snowmobiles--and you know your champagne would be well-chilled!

There are ice hotels around the world, including Canada, so you can celebrate your "nup-cicles" in the country of your choice. Winter is one of my favorite times of the year. I got married in the winter, and I love having a winter anniversary. As a matter of fact, an ice hotel would be a wonderful place to celebrate our anniversary--can you think of anything more romantic than crotchless thermal underwear?
