A few weeks ago I was part of something really exciting. You see, I'm a Makeup Artist who does a ton of weddings and I was chosen by the mega wedding site, Style Me Pretty to be one of their select vendors which is a pretty big deal since they hand pick all of their wedding vendors and recommend us to the throngs of brides who read their site religiously. Even if you aren't planning a wedding, the site is a serious time trap where you can click around and just look at photos all day. It's huge.
So on Style Me Pretty (SMP) they have what they call 'inspiration boards,' which are basically an array of photos using all aspects of a wedding from the dress to flowers and beyond that highlight a color palette, pattern, and theme. I teamed up with a group of fellow SMP wedding vendors in Denver to loosely re-create one of their inspiration boards- adding our own details and twists.
The shoot was captured beautifully by Colorado photographer James Christianson. You can see the full team responsible for every detail, along with the rest of the photos from the shoot here.
For our purposes though, let's talk makeup. Our bride was gorgeous first of all which made my job easier. Her skin was beautiful, and it was fair. Really fair actually, which is the most difficult skin to work on because the makeup looks amplified against such a light palette and can easily go from subtle to waaay overboard in a snap. What I've learned over the years is to layer the color little by little and use smaller brushes to keep the color contained to the precise area you want. You can always add more, but muting color that's too dark presents more of a challenge.
Since it's against the laws of fashion to create a natural look on a stunning girl wearing a Vera Wang gown, I opted for eyes that said 'sophisticated glamour' which is the big sister to 'smokey' I suppose. It packs the same punch but looks more dressy and polished. I used hints of silver, with charcoal and neutral browns for her shadows and lined using black liner.
For her lashes, I used one of my favorite ones by Ardell, their 120 set that works on girls with larger eyes who already have a good amount of lashes so they aren't overpowering and it doesn't look like she's auditioning for a drag show. They're surprisingly subtle, especially after I curled her lashes into them and applied a few coats of mascara.
We were at the Daniel's & Fisher building in Denver, which we call the Clocktower. The backside of the clock's faces served as interior walls for one spacious floor in the building and throughout the day the sun's light that passed through it changed the clock's face into shades of white and buttery yellow. It served as a unique and romantic backdrop that played perfectly into our black and white palette.
Think pink. Using beige and neutrals wouldn't give the pop that pink did for her lips and cheeks. Contrasting her coloring allowed for her features to really stand out. I'm using my go-to cheek brush here, NARS Yachiyo which I love for laying down the right amount of color and blending it in to perfection.

Thank you again to everyone who perfectly executed every detail of this shoot. It was a day that reminded me why I love my job.
Stumble It!

Add to myYahoo!Hi all,
Sorry for the lull in posting, however I am away from the office and spending most days at appointments so very limited time to think of an interesting concept!
Over to todays post which is regarding some gorgeous bridesmaids outfits that can truly complement the wedding colour palette and even enhance it, especially in formal shots!
Please do spare a thought for your bridesmaids when choosing their dresses, it is very popular to set a colour and have them wear what they like in the chosen shade. Perhaps you can have a seamstress make up dresses using the same fabric but different designs so as to complement each ladies body shape.
Please refrain from shiny satin by the beach, it's a little wrong!!!

Add to myYahoo! Our sweet little girl is 4 weeks old today! In just another 11 months she will be ONE! It's always like me to think ahead! But trust me...I'm cherishing this newborn stage to the maximum extent!!
Ilah is such a good baby. I prayed to God that she would be an easy infant since my pregnancy was so rough. I thought that would be a good trade off - Ha! God answered my prayer. Granted, we're still in the early stages but so far, so good!

Happy ONE MONTH Birthday Ilah! You are the joy of our lives!!

Hey y’all! We were so happy to see how much you loved Katie Brown’s new column (see it here if you missed it the first time around). One of you commented that while you loved Katie’s topic, you'd love to see a similar column written from the bridesmaid’s perspective.
Well ask and you shall receive, lovely readers! We’re not ready to roll out an entirely new column, but I thought for the next month or so, we’d tackle a few thorny attendant issues right here in Etiquette with Emily. I’m going to be a bridesmaid not once but TWICE this year (once for my sister and once for my dear Katharine), which I’m going to pretend makes me something of an expert. You with me? Good.
Up first? The bridesmaid dress! (Dun dun dun.) And what to do if you hate it. To be honest, we’ve come a long way from the peach and aqua prom dress imposters of yore (Katherine Heigl excepted, apparently! And hey -- vintage prom dresses can be beautiful!) In our real wedding interviews, brides often note that one of their top priorities was finding a reasonably priced dress that was worthy of being worn again for the girls gracious to stand next to them on W-Day.

Which sounds great. But in actuality, is still easier said than done. For instance, one of my favorite cocktail dresses of all time is the J. Crew Bow Monde dress. Gorgeous? I sure think so! But many a friend who I’ve eagerly shown this number to has blanched at the oversize bow.
So, to the point: what if you hate the dress that has been chosen for you to wear? Ms. Post weighs in:
"It's important [for the bride] to think about [her] bridesmaids' height and figures and look for styles that will be as flattering as possible for everyone. Though the maid of honor traditionally assists in the selection of bridesmaids' attire, try to consult with all your attendants."
Okay, well, yes. Good point, Ms. Post. But if it's ugly, not just ill-fitting, are you "allowed" to say anything? (Keeping in mind, of course, that "ugly" is often in the eye of the beholder.) I think that depends on the bride and your relationship with her. If she's proven to be at all touchy or protective about her wedding decisions, I'd say to drop it. BUT! If, in the past, 1) she's seemed receptive to constructive criticism, 2) you're confident that the other maids agree with you on the, errr, aesthetic value of the dress in question, and 3) you have a close relationship with the bride, I'd give you the green light to approach the subject. Preferably before a deposit's been put down.
What about y'all? Anyone ever worn an "ugly" bridesmaid dress? Did you say something to the bride? Did you want to? If you did, how did the conversation go? Do you have any advice? Spill the deets, please!
?As always, if you have an etiquette conundrum, please send it my way! We’d love to hash it out on the blog. That’s emily at iloveswmag dot com.
